Ohanaeze Inaugurates Committee Ahead Of Elections, Says No Consensus Candidate

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Sunday, announced a 40-man committee to conduct the body’s forthcoming elections billed for January 11, 2021. This was stated after the organisation’s Ime-Obi meeting held in Enugu.

The president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nwodo, during the meeting, stated that his administration would never impose any candidate to succeed him. According to him, “I have no desire to nominate my successor contrary to widespread reports. My administration cannot undermine the unity of Igbo land no matter the pressure by anybody. We have set the template for a peaceful transition, and whatever anybody has done to suggest that we are working towards a consensus candidate is not true. We are committed to a credible process that will be accepted by Ndigbo.”

Nwodo adopted 40 persons proposed by his executive from the five Igbo speaking states, including Rivers and Delta, as members of the 2021 Electoral Committee. Our correspondent reports that while Imo, Abia, Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi states had four members each, Delta and Rivers states had three members each.

The members came from Ndigbo Lagos, Association of Southeast Town Unions (ASETU), the Diaspora Youth Wing, Ohanaeze Abuja, Aka Ikenga, and Izu-Umunna.

The meeting also appointed Chief Iwuanyanwu, Senator Nnamani and Igwe Alfred Achebe to look into the misunderstanding between Ebonyi State governor, Dave Umahi, and former Senate president Anyim Pius Anyim and others as a result of the governor’s recent defection to the APC.

Those in attendance included the minister of labour and employment, Dr Chris Ngige; Senator Rochas Okorocha, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, General Obi Umahi (retrd), Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, ministers of science and technology, Ogbonnaya Onu; environment, Mrs Sharon Ikeazor; former Senate presidents Ken Nnamani and Adolphus Wabara, and Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe.
