‘Referee Had A Bad Game’, Bayern Rages After Loss To Real Madrid

Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti has criticized the referee after his side was beaten by Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Italian said the referee Viktor Kassai “wasn’t up to the task” of a Champions League quarter-final game as as the reigning European champions won 6-3 on aggregate.

He further called for video technology, adding that it was the official, not Zinedine Zidane’s team who had eliminated the Bundesliga leaders.

“We had thought of everything going into this game – except the referee,” Ancelotti said.

“You can’t decide a semi-final spot like this. It shouldn’t happen at this level.”

“The referee probably wasn’t up to the task.

“I don’t think Real Madrid have any influence on referees. The officials simply got it wrong. I had never been in favour of video technology, but I must admit it’s necessary now.

“I spoke to the referee after the game. I told him ‘good job’.”

Bayern were victim of two harsh calls, as midfielder Arturo Vidal saw red, and Cristiano Ronaldo scored an effort which appeared offside.

The Germans had led as Robert Lewandowski confidently drilled in a penalty, with Los Blancos struggling to find form.

However, the vital decisions helped shape the final score with Ronaldo taking advantage. The Portuguese added two more goals in extra time to seal his hat trick, taking his tally to five in the tie despite the visitor’s contention that he was offside for his last two strikes.

Vidal said: “It is very tough when they steal a game from you like that — two goals offside and me wrongly sent off. When two big teams meet like this in the Champions League, such a robbery cannot happen.

“We were 2-1 up in the game, they got scared, and the referee began his show. You could see it clearly, it was very ugly. Then the usual thing happened, a player less. And we began to doubt a bit.

“The dressing room is very sad, very angry. In a game of such intensity the result cannot be decided by the referee. The referee has eliminated us. Real did not know what they were doing. Everyone knows what they saw.”
