Rio Olympics: Siasia Picks Final 18-Man Squad

Nigeria U-23 head coach, Samson Siasia has named his final 18-man squad for next month’s Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.

Top on the list is Super Eagles’ captain and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, who was selected as one of only two over-aged players, alongside Chippa United of South Africa goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi.

Akpeyi who is expected to be the number one goalkeeper ahead of Emmanuel Daniel.

Also, surprisingly left out of the list is former U-17 and U-20 striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, who was omitted from the list alongside Kenneth Omeruo, Greuther Furth of Germany signing, Erhun Obanor.

Meanwhile, Awoniyi, along with Godwin Saviour, Sunshine Stars winger, Stanley Dimgba and Kano Pillars goalkeeper, Yusuf Mohammed, have however been named as alternate players, to replace injured team-mates.

The Dream Team VI, who will open their Olympic Games campaign in the men’s football event against Japan, will be hoping to beat their 2008 beijing Olympic feat, where they won Slver.

Defenders: Sincere Seth, Kingsley Madu, Saturday Erimuya, William Troost-Ekong, Ndifreke Effiong, Stanley Amuzie
Midfielders: Mikel Obi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Popoola Sodiq, Azubuike Okechukwu, Usman Mohammed, Shehu Abdullahi
Strikers: Umar Aminu, Imoh Ezekiel, Junior Ajayi, Sadiq Umar.
