The Rotary Club of Asokoro, District 9125, yesterday donated food items, clothes, and medical equipment to internally-displaced persons camping at Durumi.

The club’s president, Rotarian Frances Bekey, who urged the IDPs to be steadfast, called on relevant authorities to make the school located in the camp more functional.

“I am not satisfied with the school. Its teachers are volunteers recruited by the community. The school is not also linked to any government institution, thus the pupils and students cannot be absorbed into government schools.”

She also called for donations of skills acquisition instruments for trainings following complains of lack of sewing machines meant to teach the displaced persons by the skills acquisition instructor.

In another development, the club visited Hope for Survival Orphanage at Gishiri to mark the recent United Nations World Humanitarian Day.

During the visit, the club, along with other clubs, donated presents to the inmates.

Rotarian Bekey said, “The inmates should be assisted to realize their goals in life. There is lack, and that calls for more assistance to orphanages.”

The high point of the visit was the award of scholarships to three of the inmates by one of the clubs.
