SHOCKING! Reactions To Bolu Okupe’s ‘Gay Status’ Show Nigerians Mainstreaming Homosexuality

There are indications that more Nigerians are beginning to welcome the idea that homosexuals in the country should be allowed to openly practice their sexuality.

Bolu Okupe, the son of Nigerian politician and former presidential spokesman, Doyin Okupe, made headlines on Friday after taking to social media two days prior to declare that he is gay.

“Yes I’m Gay AF,” Bolu wrote in an Instagram post where he was seen wearing a rainbow-themed pants that symbolizes the LGBTQ community. The picture also showed him waving the rainbow flag known as the “gay pride flag”.

Bolu’s decision to openly declare his gay status and the accompanying reactions on social media forced his father to issue a public statement across his social media pages.

Okupe, who served under former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan as media aide, revealed that he had his son “at the time I gave my life to Christ” and decided to name him “MOBA OLUWA RIN, ( I WALKED WITH GOD)” for that reason.

The politician admitted that Bolu’s gay status was not new to him, but noted his son, “knows that as a Christian and a witness for Christ (an evangelist) I am vehemently opposed to homosexuality as it runs contrary to the avowed precepts of my Christian faith,” adding that he took it as “a spiritual challenge”.

But many Nigerians who reacted to Okupe’s tweet appeared to side his son, while others blamed the development on the custom of politicians sending their kids abroad for education.

Below are some of the reactions on Twitter:

@yahayausman02: “I feel your pains and I’m not trying to be wicked over this, but I would love this to happen to all the sons and daughters of the politicians, so that their lives will become useless, therefore the sons and daughters of the poor will take the position of leadership in Nigeria”

@foodandlens: “Try not to waste valuable time dwelling on what you and the demands of the society or using God against your own son, accept and love your children unconditionally, that’s your duty as a father. God created your son.”

@daniel84560021: “Sir, your son can still be gay and walk with God. Instead of telling us that you do not approve of such orientation, you could use this opportunity and be the father you were not. UNTIL A MAN KNOWS THAT HE THINKS HE KNOWS, HE KNOWS IT NOT.”

@RevJide: “Your son is a beautiful gift from God. “Fearfully and wonderfully made” I believe he needs his father’s unconditional love, don’t let society and religious fanatics cause confusion. We are all children of God, your child is not a crime nor an abomination.”

@Damoche1: “Is the boy in Nigeria or abroad? This is what happens when they travel to learn all manner of things when there is alot to learn at home. From seeking for better education abroad to embracing this. Bolu, it’s well with you.”

@sadeniran: “Not trying to be judgemental… The result of abandoning our cultural value system in pursuit of material wealth! We’re all guilty of this and I’m sure God is not an author of confusion… We need to reflect deeply on our choices in life!”

@liamjajitoby: “There’s nothing wrong with your son sir, he only chose to live his truth which is very ok. Love and acceptance his human.”

@Omobola32: “Some people will defend gay to heaven but would they be sincerely happy to have one as a child? What an irony your son took his eyes off those big boobs and bums and those curvy shapes of ladies and decided to go for muscles and bones like himself,  #whatalife!”

@xexiboy2: “I know this hurts a lot to know Sir, but this is life. When we grow, we make our own choices and find our paths. Love him more, judge him not, condemn him not. God has not condemned him, his sin for being gay is his condemnation. But with prayer & love, he can be redeemed.”

@_karenlovesyou_: “If your god rejects your son’s natural self, then your son has every right to walk away from him. I pity him for having such a foolish father. Maybe he should pray for you, instead.”

@MatawalBulus: “The level of support your son is receiving as can be seen here is appalling and a clear indication of how immoral, perverse and ungodly our generation had become. May God deliver him as you desire as a father in Jesus’ name, AMEN.”

@brownsugar_58: “He needs your love and ur secret prayer to God concerning him, don’t Shawn him off. Rem Jesus came for sinners not the redeemed ones.”
