Slaughter Any Cow Roaming Abuja, Senate Orders FCT Minister

The Senate has ordered the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Alhaji Mohammed Bello, to kill any cow found roaming the metropolis.

In a statement through the Chairman of the Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Dino Melaye, the senate said that the roaming of cattle’s on the streets of Abuja, the nation’s capital was disturbing.

Speaking on Monday at an interactive session with the authorities of the FCT Ministry, Melaye said the arbitrary movements of cows on Abuja streets and highways have been a concern to the National Assembly and residents of the nation’s capital.

He further said that if the cows cannot be killed, they should be arrested and fined a minimum of N50,000 per cow.

Melaye said: “We are not particularly happy with the state of sanitation in the FCT. We have received a lot of complaints across the FCT metropolis but the greatest of it all is the menace of cattle rearers.”

He recalled how on his way to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, he saw an under-aged herdsman with over 50 cows passing through the pedestrian route thereby blocking the only way for pedestrians and causing confusion among the residents of the area.

Senator Melaye said that the trend is absurd and unacceptable in the capital city, noting that, “If it were to be at a time when we have visiting presidents/diplomats, what impression would we have given to our visitors.

“So on this note, we authorise the minister to slaughter any cow that is seen within the metropolis and if that is not going to work, any cow that is seen within the metropolis of FCT must be arrested with a minimum fine of N50,000 per cow.

“This must be enforced, if not anytime again we see cows or we receive reports of cows moving around the streets, the committee would sanction the FCT administration,” he said.
