Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been charged with misconduct by the English Football Association (FA) for his behaviour towards referee Jon Moss and fourth official Anthony Taylor during his side’s 2-1 win over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The FA alleged that the Frenchman “used abusive and/or insulting words” towards Taylor and then made physical contact with the official in the 92nd minute of the game.

It was gathered on Monday that the Arsenal boss called Taylor a “cheat”.

An FA statement read: “Arsene Wenger has been charged for misconduct following Arsenal’s game against Burnley on Sunday.

“It is alleged that in or around the 92nd minute, he used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official.

“It is further alleged that following his dismissal from the technical area, his behaviour in remaining in the tunnel area and making physical contact with the fourth official amounted to improper conduct.”

Wenger has until 1800 GMT on Thursday to respond. His fate will be decided by an independent three-person regulatory commission. The case has been deemed “non-standard” by the FA and so has a broad theoretical range of sanctions. That includes fines, a touchline band or complete stadium bans.

Wenger was sent off by Moss for his protests at the award of Burnley’s injury-time penalty. The Frenchman refused to leave the pitch and had an altercation with Taylor as he tried to view the match from the tunnel.

Wenger refused to confirm publicly what had been said to Taylor but did apologise for his behaviour. After the game, the Arsenal boss claimed that his language had been “nothing bad” and something you “hear every day in football”.
