Germans Abducted By Unknown Gunmen Regain Freedom

A German archaeologist, Prof. Peter Breunji and his colleague, Johannes Buringer, who were abducted by unknown gunmen in Kagarko Local Government Area, Kaduna State, northern Nigeria, have regained freedom.

Recall that the foreigners, who were abducted on the 22nd February, 2017, have since been at the mercy of their captors.

A senior police officer in Kaduna who spoke on the condition of anonymity said they were released on Saturday night, adding that no ransom was paid.

Samuel Aruwan, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Governor Nasir El-Rufai confirmed the release in a statement on Sunday.

The statement read in part, “the abducted German archaeologist, Professor Peter Breunij, and his research assistant, Johannes Buringer, have been freed.

“Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has commended the security agencies for their efforts in securing the release of the Germans.”

The professor is the leader of a four man team from the University of Frankfurt, Germany, working in Nigeria in collaboration ‎with the National Commission for Museum and Monuments and other institutions  on the relics of Nok culture in Nigeria.
