Strike: We’re Fighting For Your Interest, ASUU Tells Protesting Students

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said on Monday that its current strike to press demands for a better university system was for both the interests of the teachers and students.

It urged students to support the union.

Recall that ASUU had gone on strike since March 23 over disagreements with the Federal Government.

One of the issues is lack of adequate funding of tertiary institutions.

THE WHISTLER earlier reported that students of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) had called for the reopening of the school, adding that the continued closure was negatively impacting on them.

But, ASUU, in a tweet on Monday, stressed that it was actually fighting for the rights of students and for the improvement of the education sector.

“Students who are our children and partners in progress should show understanding, what we are asking from the government are in their interest and the interest of the nation, good hostel accommodation, good classroom blocks that can engender effective learning, laboratories where cutting edge research can be carried out and offices that can drive the process of quality university education,” it tweeted.

It added that the decay across universities called for urgent intervention by the government.

“So what we are asking of the government are not baseless things, but those things that in 2012, the government conducted during a needs assessment survey and found out that there is widespread rot and decay in the university system,” it stated.
