An advocacy movement for youths has offered to give free legal representation to any Nigerian arrested for violating the Federal Government’s Twitter ban.

This followed directives by the federal government to prosecute anyone still using Twitter after its ban in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, issued a directive Saturday, ordering federal prosecutors to arrest and prosecute users of the microblogging site after the president suspended its usage in the country.

“Malami directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) at the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, to swing into action and commence in earnest the process of prosecution of violators of the Federal Government De-activation of operations of Twitter in Nigeria,” it read.

Malami also directed, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy to collaborate with prosecutors “to ensure the speedy prosecution of offenders without any further delay.”

In reaction to this directive, the group known as ‘Arise Youth Nigeria’ says it will be granting free legal aid to anyone harassed by the government.
