Uganda Election: Military ‘Surrounds’ Opposition Leader’s Residence

Robert Bobi Wine Kyagulanyi, the main opposition leader who lost to incumbent President, Yoweri Museveni in Thursday presidential election, has accused the military of keeping him and his wife under house arrest since election day.

He revealed this on Sunday, via his Twitter handle.

Recall that Wine (a lawmaker) lost to the Museveni, who was announced winner of the polls by the nation’s electoral Commission.

But Wine had immediately alleged voter fraud at the presidential polls, saying he was the winner.

On Sunday, he called for help, saying his family has been restricted to their house by a military siege, making it difficult for them to access food.

“It’s now four days since the military surrounded our home and placed my wife and I under house arrest. We have run out of food supplies and when my wife tried to pick food from the garden yesterday, she was blocked and assaulted by the soldiers staged in our compound.

“Everyone including media and my party officials are restricted from accessing me. @ZaakeFrancis was arrested outside my gate as he made his way to my house, he was badly beaten by soldiers. He is now in Rubaga hospital,” he tweeted.

THE WHISTLER reports that Museveni, who actively used his Twitter account to campaign for re-election, was yet to tweet about developments for the past 5 days.

He would be staying in office for a sixth term, after 35 years of being in power.

Meanwhile, the United Nations (UN) had warned the country’s security forces on the need to “show maximum restraint and act according to human rights principles”.
