UN Stands Against Coup In Sudan—Antonio Guterres

The United Nations has called on the military officials responsible for the coup in Sudan to immediately backtrack and restore constitutional order.

THE WHISTLER earlier reported that Sudanese soldiers arrested the country’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok in an apparent coup plot.

The soldiers subsequently seized media stations owned by the government and announced the dissolution of the country’s political leadership while declaring a state of emergency.

But the move has been greeted with stern condemnation by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres who revealed in a tweet that the organization stands with the people of Sudan against the coup plotters.

In a tweet on Monday, he stated that those held captive by the soldiers must be released.

Guterres noted that Sudan had faced internal struggles with regards to its democracy, adding that the soldiers’ recent action sets the nation backwards.

“I condemn the ongoing military coup in Sudan. Prime Minister Hamdok and all other officials must be released immediately. There must be full respect for the constitutional charter to protect the hard-won political transition. The UN will continue to stand with the people of Sudan,” he added.

Recall that on September 21, an attempt by the military to seize power was aborted, according to persons familiar with developments in the country.
