Universities Urged To Fight Corruption As NUC Alleges Fake Professors Working In Nigerian Varsities

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Abubakar Rasheed has admonished universities to fight corruption within the system.

The NUC boss disclosed in the November edition of NUC’s bulletin, that 100 fake professors are working in Nigerian universities.

Rasheed said that the commission observed that at least one hundred professors whose credentials are not genuine was uploaded on its website, adding that it had to send the names to the various universities for verification.

“The updated version of those documents will be published by December 2019 and professors in their respective universities uploaded their CV on the website which was used in the compilation of the directory. About 100 fake professors also uploaded their details but we detected them,” he said.

While speaking at the 2019 retreat for Vice-Chancellors by the NUC Strategy Advisory Committee, he urged the VCs to embrace the fight against corruption so as to cleanse the educational system from corrupt practices.

“The fight against fake professors is a collective responsibility,” he said.

The NUC boss asked the vice-chancellors to check the excesses of their affiliated institutions, stressing that among other things, lecturers should have time for their students as it would help students to learn.

Abubakar told the vice-chancellors that the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, had in a recent meeting, complained that the degree certificates of some corps members were controversial.

He also made it clear that lecturers should no longer teach in more than two universities, while stating that teaching hours per day should not be less than eight hours.
