USAID, Bauchi State Sign MoU To Support 2 Million Pupils

The U.S. government, through the Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Bauchi state government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will see about 2 million pupils learn how to read and another 551,000 children the opportunity to attend classes in community-based learning centers by the year 2020.

The MoU was signed Wednesday in Abuja and was done by the USAID Mission Director, Mr. Michael T. Harvey and Governor M.A. Abubakar of Bauch State.

The five-year MoU sets out the shared and individual commitments for collaboration in the education sector made by both USAID and the Government of Bauchi and provides a framework for mutual accountability for education activities in Bauchi State.

The USAID said it supports the Bauchi state government’s goals and targets in its education sector strategic plans, and establishes a preliminary plan for joint monitoring and evaluation of progress.

“The United States commends Bauchi State for its extraordinary efforts to provide greater learning opportunities for its children. This MOU will expand the partnership between USAID and Bauchi State to improve primary education in Bauchi,” Harvey said.

The support is part of the USAID’s efforts to improve the quality of and access to basic education.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Governor Abubakar thanked the United States Government for the support initiative, and disclosed that education remains the bedrock to a future off shared prosperity.

According to him, given the premium his administration places on education, he has continually devoted 20 percent of the state budget to education, and expressed the hope that the support by the USAID will go a long way in strengthening the state’s educational drive.
