WTO Admits Nigeria’s Okonjo Iweala As Nominee For DG Position

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has listed Nigeria’s global economist, Okonjo Iweala, as a nominee for the position of Director General.

WTO disclosed this in a tweet on Tuesday, days after President Muhammadu Buhari, recommended her for the top spot.

“Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Chair of the Board of Gavi and Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, has been nominated by #Nigeria as a candidate for the post of WTO Director-General,” WTO confirmed.

Also joining the race for the job is
Egypt’s nominee, Mr Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh.

WTO added that nomination period continues till 8th of July.

WTO, in its guidelines, stated that the nominees would have to share their vision with member states, and that they would now make a final decision.
