WTO: Trump Administration’s ‘Refusal’ To Back Okonjo-Iweala Sparks Twitter Debate Among Nigerians

Nigerians are arguing over the reported refusal of the United States to support Former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for the position of the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

THE WHISTLER had earlier gathered that the US Government backed Korean Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee, for the WTO job.

The US spoke of Yoo Myung-hee as being “a bona fide trade expert who has distinguished herself during a 25-year career as a successful trade negotiator and trade policy maker.”

However, Okonjo-Iweala is in a favourable position for the WTO top spot as THE WHISTLER learnt that she had secured 104 votes from 164 member countries of the WTO.

In his views, Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, said on Thursday that the development was already hurting the perception of many Nigerians about the US.

He urged President Donald Trump to have a rethink on the matter.

“I love @realDonaldTrump & I want him to win on Nov. 3rd. I believe he is the best for America &the world &that he is the only one that is capable of standing up to China. I do not however believe that he is infallible &his decision to block @NOIweala as DG of WTO proves that.

“This extraordinary lady is by far the best candidate, her integrity is unimpeachable & her ability is unquestionable. Opposing her has upset millions of Trump-lovers in Nigeria & Africa &hundreds of thousands of Nigerian/Americans in the U.S. itself.
I hope he reconsiders,” he tweeted.

On his part, former Kaduna State Senator, Shehu Sani, though he did not tie his words to the US position on the WTO matter, he called on all Nigerians living in the country to back former US Vice President Joe Biden at the election.

“Even without a voting right,Nigerians should back Joe Biden,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, some argued that international relations is all about national interests and as such, the Trump administration should not be criticised for its position.

Others claimed that normally the US cannot support the interest of its major economic opponent, China.

But some believed that the U.S. Government’s refusal is a slap on Nigerians.
