Abia Governor Inaugurates Panel To Probe Allegations Of Abuses By Security Agents

The Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has directed the expansion of the membership of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate allegations of extra-judicial killings and brutality by security agents in the state.

In a state-wide broadcast, the governor appealed to the youths to leave the streets and embrace peace.

“We wish to appeal to hardworking Abia youths to avail themselves of the opportunity provided by this Panel to ventilate their grievances on relevant issues and leave the streets immediately to avoid further loss of lives and destruction of properties as they are assured of diligent implementation of the Committee’s report.”

Security agents who are currently enforcing the prevailing curfew in the state were advised to exercise necessary restraints to avoid further loss of lives.

The govetnor said his administration prioritizes the security of lives and property of its citizens and visitors alike, and would therefore, do everything necessary to ensure an early return to normalcy in the state, to “enable our enterprising people go about their normal routines without fear of harm or molestation.”
