Anambra Govt Knocks EFCC For Placing Gov Obiano On Watchlist

The Anambra State Government has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly placing Governor Willie Obiano on watchlist.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinobi, described the move as “immature” while responding to THE WHISTLER‘s request for comment.

The EFCC, in a letter Dated November 15, had notified the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) of the move and asked to be informed of any attempt by Governor Obiano to leave the country through any of the international airports.

But speaking to our correspondent in a phone interview, Adinobi described reports of the development as false.

He said, “The governor has been out for the past 12 days and he left through our airport, no issue whatsoever, so I doubt the credibility of this report. I think it is a rumour sponsored by opponents.

“The governor enjoys immunity conferred on him by the constitution and this right cannot be breached.

“He is out of the country and he didn’t leave under any disguise and he is coming back very soon”.

Adinobi noted that since the governor will hand over to his successor in March 2021, it will be ” immature” for “any government agency” to infringe on the immunity granted to him by the Nigerian constitution.

This newspaper attempted to get EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren’s reaction but his lines were switched off.
