Armed Robbers Kill Two In Umuahia

There was palpable tension in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Friday as some suspected armed robbers attacked a vehicle conveying a Lebanese who reportedly made huge withdrawal from one of the new generation banks in the city.

According to an eyewitness, the driver of the vehicle and a policeman escorting the Lebanese were shot and killed on the spot.

Names of the victims could not be ascertained as at the time of this report.

The incident occurred around Mission Hill area opposite the Methodist Church of Nigeria Umuahia, capital of Abia State at about 12:00pm.

Our correspondent gathered that the robbers trailed the vehicle from a second generation bank at Bank Road, Umuahia, where the money was withdrawn.

They robbers made away with the money, said to be up to three million Naira.

Some keke Napep drivers who witnessed the incident blamed the police for mounting road block that allowed the hoodlums catch up with the vehicle.

Attempt to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna proved abortive.
