‘No Cause For Alarm’ — IGP Assures Nigerians After Leaked Memo On Planned Boko Haram Attacks

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has assured Nigerians of their safety after an internal police memo on planned attacks by Boko Haram insurgents leaked online.

IGP Baba specifically assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Plateau State that their safety was guaranteed.

The memo had indicated that the insurgents were planning to carry out coordinated attacks on the FCT and Plateau, amongst others.

In the memo, the police chief directed commissioners of police and other officers in the targeted locations to be on alert.

In a series of tweets on Friday, the Force headquarters said IGP Baba’s directive, “which is a deliberate, intelligence-driven and proactive measure, is designed to prepare the law enforcement community for comprehensive response to any threat to lives and property”.

The IGP noted that rather than become a source of panic to citizens, the security alert should send a message of reassurance to them about the operational preparedness of the police to preemptively contain any threat to public peace and security.

“The alert does not in any way suggest that an attack is imminent in any of the two States,” the tweet read.

The IGP, therefore called for calm, urging the citizens to go about their normal activities with a renewed sense of vigour, patriotism and vigilance as the police continue to work with other relevant stakeholders to keep the public space safe.
