Crystal Palace Beat Liverpool To Win Community Shield

Crystal Palace earned a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Liverpool to win the 2025 Community Shield at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The regulation time ended 2-2 before the Eagles emerged victorious in the penalty shootout.

The battle between the Premier League winners and the FA Cup winners ended in favour of Crystal Palace, who produced a battling performance in the encounter.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot handed full debuts to new signings, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Hugo Ekitike, who showed Liverpool glimpses of his quality with an early opener.

The French forward produced a low effort from Florian Wirtz’s pass to give Liverpool the lead in the fourth minute to make it 1-0.

Phillipe Mateta restored parity for Crystal Palace from the spot after Sarr was fouled by Virgil Van Dijk, he sent Allison the wrong way to make it 1-1 in the 17th minute.

Four minutes later, another new signing, Frimpong scored a stunner from a difficult angle to give the Premier League champions a 2-1 lead going into the half-time break.

Ismaila Sarr equalised for Crystal Palace in the 77th minute with a close range finish to make it 2-2.

Both sides failed to score in the regulation time before the match went into penalties.

Mohammed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott all missed for Liverpool while Cody Gakpo, and Dominik Szoboszlai scored for the Premier League champions but it was not enough as they ended up on the losing side.

Borna Sosa, Eberechi Eze both missed for Crystal Palace, and Phillipe Mateta, Ismaila Sarr, scored their efforts before Justin Devenny won the penalty shootout for Oliver Glasner’s side.

The Austrian manager has now led Crystal Palace to the FA Cup, and the Community Shield to etch his name in the club’s history.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, who saved two penalties in the shootout described the victory over Liverpool as incredible.

He said: “These emotions are fantastic. The manager said we’d get chances in the second half and we deserved to win that in the end. The homework we did for the penalties was great, thank you to everyone behind the scenes.

“It’s incredible to beat Liverpool. Coming here they were the favourites, they have unbelievable players and are a good team. But we’ve won two trophies in three months for this club and it’s a remarkable moment in our history.”

Up next for Crystal Palace is a Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on August 17.

Liverpool will open their Premier League campaign against Bournemouth on August 15 at Anfield.
