Enugu Health Commissioner Dies

The Enugu State Health Commissioner, Anthony Ugochukwu is dead. It was gathered that the Oji River-born surgeon died at Memphys Hospital, Enugu, Friday night.

Jeff Mba, representing Oji River state Constituency in the Enugu House of Assembly, confirmed the commissioner’s death Saturday morning.

The lawmaker said, “The late Ugochukwu was a genius and technocrat; we are talking about a renowned professor of surgery who had a lot to offer in turning around out health sector. It’s a terrible blow.”

A source who spoke with THE WHISTLER on condition of anonimity said the late surgeon recently returned from the United States, adding that he had been sick.
“He had been sick from his days as provost of College of Medicine, Enugu State University of Technology, Parklane, Enugu. He later recovered and concluded his work in the college. However, shortly after he was appointed commissioner last year, the sickness returned, this time more severe,” she said.

Recall that amidst the scourge of the coronvirus pandemic, the affairs of the Enugu State Ministry of Health have been run by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Ifeanyi Agujiobi.
