It was drama on Monday at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) as cleaners responsible for the cleaning of the office complex of the FCT minister, Malam Muhammad Bello as well as that of the permanent secretary, Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye and other agencies and departments rained curses on the officials and downed tools over non-payments of salary arrears owed them.

Specifically, the cleaners who came out in large number on Monday to demand for their salaries, in their curses on Bello and Ajakaiye, said nothing good should go to them for delaying their salaries.

The cleaners mostly widows and orphans threatened that until the administration paid up their outstanding salaries, they will not go back to their various duty posts, just as they littered some of the offices in protest.

“I have not paid my children’s school fee for last term because of these greedy people who take delight in seeing the poor masses suffer. Their children are in big schools in Abuja and some abroad. It will not be well with their generations for this pain we are undergoing.

“If it is the minister or the permanent secretary or any big man who is withholding our payments, I pray to my God that it shall not be well for him and members of his families,” one of the protesters rained curses.

Another cleaner, who confided in our correspondent revealed that the FCT Administration is owing them three months arrears.

Our correspondent confirmed that this is the fifth time the cleaners have embarked on protest since the inception of this present FCT administration over eight months ago.

As at the time of filing this report, both the minister and the permanent secretary were not on seat to address the protesters.

However, a source in the permanent secretary’s office who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that the delay in the payment is as a result of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) of the federal government, stressing that the administration is still clearance from the Central Bank of Nigeria on FCTA lodgments.
