IDPs Dying Of Starvation In Nigeria – MSF

The international medical aid agency, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has raised alarm that Internally Displaced Persons, (IDPs) are dying in Nigeria in their hundreds.

According to MSF, about 200 IDPs have died since May, 2016 averaging 6 per day.

“Since 23 May, at least 188 people have died in the camp – almost six people per day,” MSF said in a statement.

In a recent report, the aid organization said roughly one in five of over 800 children examined had acute malnutrition.

“This is the first time MSF has been able to access Bama but we already know the needs of the people there are beyond critical,” said Ghada Hatim, the organization’s head of mission in Nigeria.

“We are treating malnourished children in medical facilities in Maiduguri and see the trauma on the faces of our patients who have witnessed and survived many horrors,” Hatim added.

Nigeria’s chief of the anti-corruption agency, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, had recently given indication that an investigation would be launched into allegations of diversion of aid by camp officials.
