Johannesburg Mayor Herman Marshaba Resigns Over ‘Racial Inequality’

The mayor of South Africa’s biggest city Johannesburg, Herman Marshaba, has on Monday resigned following the main opposition Democratic Alliance’s approach to racial inequality.

Marshaba said during a press conference in Johannesburg that, “I cannot reconcile myself with a group of people who believe that race is irrelevant in the discussion of inequality and poverty in South Africa.”

He disclosed that his decision was motivated by the election of former DA leader Helen Zille as the party’s federal council chairperson at the weekend.

In 2016 when Herman was elected into office, he became the city’s first mayor not from the ruling African National Congress (ANC) since apartheid ended in 1994.

Herman a 60-year-old multi millionaire made his fortune in black hair products. He was one of the most senior politicians in the pro-business DA, long considered a party for middle-class white people.

Recall that South Africa has a long case of different forms of racial abuses and in recent months xenophobia against fellow Africans.
