The National Association of Nigerian Students has called on the Osun State Police Command to extend their investigation into the death of a 300-level student of the Federal University Oye Ekiti, Romoke Oloyede, beyond food poisoning.
The Vice President of the National Association of Universities Students, David Aruson, said in a statement on Saturday that Oloyede, who reportedly died after a meal of rice during a visit to her boyfriend residing in Iree, Osun State might have been used for money ritual.
He said the students’ body visited the room where she died and discovered some fetish items which suggested that Malik might be an Internet fraudster.
The NAUS vice president asked the police to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter and institute a legal action against the suspect after that.
Oloyede and her friend, Fadeke, who is a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, were said to have visited the deceased’s boyfriend, Ayo Malik. The host was said to have prepared a meal of rice which the three of them ate. But while eating the rice, Oloyede started complaining of stomach ache and she eventually died.
The student leader said that there were indications that Malik, who fled after the incident before he was eventually arrested, used the late student for money rituals.
Aruson said in the statement, “So far, we have been able to gather, through our visit to the room where Malik lives at Iree ( Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State) that he is a suspected Yahoo boy based on the exhibits that were seen in his room. The exhibits included but not limited to a black clay pot and black soaps.
“No one can deny the fact that these are common features of these fetish Yahoo Boys and many ladies are falling victims on a daily basis.
“In all, we are asking the DPO to ensure that justice is secured and he has promised that the case shall be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough action and this should be done quickly.
“We are sad about Romoke’s death and we will spare nothing at the level of NANS to ensure that justice is done in this matter.
“Looking at the picture painted by Fadeke, the late Romoke’s friend, we believe there is something sinister but hidden about her mysterious death and the police must get to the roots of this.”
