Mali Crisis: US Condemns Coupists, Calls For Restoration of Constitutional Govt

The United States Government has denounced the actions of the military coupists in Mali, who ousted the Prime Minister, Boubou Cisse, and the President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, from office.

The soldiers, on Tuesday, engaged in a mutiny, thereby detaining the leaders, who eventually resigned.

In a statement on Wednesday, US Secretary of States, Mike Pompeo, condemned the coupists.

Pompeo also urged all stakeholders in the country to embrace dialogue, while respecting each other’s constitutional rights.

“The United States strongly condemns the August 18 mutiny in Mali as we would condemn any forcible seizure of power.

“We urge all stakeholders in Mali to engage in peaceful dialogue, to respect Malians’ rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and to reject violence”, he stated.

Recall that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), had frowned on the soldiers.

It also imposed sanctions on those involved, while closing the borders of member states to Mali.

As such, Pompeo backed ECOWAS and the African Union on the steps they are taking to resolve the crisis Malian crisis.

“We join the Economic Community of West African States and African Union, as well as other international partners, in denouncing these actions.

“The freedom and safety of detained government officials and their families must be ensured”, he stressed.

The statement further reads:

“The United States calls on all political and military actors to work towards a restoration of constitutional government.”
