Police Arrest Car Stealing Syndicate In Enugu

Four suspected car thieves have been arrested in Enugu, THE WHISTLER gathered on Tuesday.

They were arrested by police operatives serving at the Uwani Police Division of the Enugu State Police Command. Four suspected stolen vehicles and assorted car keys were also recovered from them, our correspondent gathered.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident.

He said, “The success followed the mounting of operational surveillance by the operatives upon receiving several reports of the car thefts within the Kenyetta Market axis in Uwani, Enugu.”

He mentioned one of the suspects as Anioko Chukwujekwu, 32, said to be the kingpin of the syndicate.

Ndukwe said, “He was arrested on March 3, 2024, at about noon while attempting to steal a car from where it was parked at the market. Numerous keys were recovered from him.

“The suspect confessed to the crime while his confessional statements led to the further arrest of three more suspects in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, who are his conspirators, receivers, and sellers of the stolen vehicles.”

He gave their names as Ugochukwu Okoh, 41; Nkemdi Idah, 65, and Nwoke Sunday, 57.

“A total of four different models of Mercedes-Benz, comprising two 190 E (respectively ash-coloured with Reg. No. SKA 292 AA and red-coloured without Reg. No.); one blue-coloured C-Class with Reg. No. AGL 512 EY, and a black-coloured 230 E (V-boot) with Reg. No. CHR 50 AE, were recovered from them,” Ndukwe said.

He added that, “The suspects will be arraigned in court and prosecuted once investigations are concluded.”
