Seun Onigbinde, Critic Who Accuses Buhari Of Not Fighting Corruption Gets FG Appointment

The Federal Government has appointment BudgIT’s Director and Co-founder, Seun Onigbinde, as a technical adviser on budget and planning at the Ministry of Budget and National Planning.

Onigbinde, who campaigned for President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015 electioneering process, had turned back to criticize the president’s style of fighting corruption.

“I supported the current government to make Nigeria better but that enthusiasm and huge expectations have significantly waned,” the data analyst had said in a 2017 interview with Punch, where he also criticized alleged lack of transparency under the current administration and proper declaration of assets by its public officials.

But announcing his appointment by the same government he’s criticized over the years, Onigbinde said: “Friends, I have accepted to take up an advisory role underwritten by an international development agency for an initial period of six months . I believe that to guard the reputation of BudgIT, I need to take an operational break and make my new position public.

“In a technical advisory role, I shall be supporting the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Agba, along the issues of budget reform, development planning, and revenue growth.

“It is similar to a task Joseph Agunbiade (my BudgIT co-founder) and I worked on in 2013–14, under the DFID-FEPAR program for the National Assembly Budget and Research Office,” he said.

The appointment immediately started to generate reactions from Nigerians on social media.

Some commended Onigbinde for accepting the appointment, saying the current administration need more “smart and energetic” people to drive the desired positive changes in the country.

Others however criticized him for allegedly using his “influence to set mob against govt” and going behind to accept an appointment under the same government he criticized.

Onigbinde is said to have since deactivated his twitter account following the criticisms currently trailing his acceptance of the appointment.
