He opened the scoring for Nuno Espirito Santo just before halftime, when he controlled the ball superbly before turning and finishing emphatically.

The 26-year-old won the club’s goal of the month award, and also the player of the month gong in August.

Awoniyi will be hoping to start the new month on a scoring note when Nottingham Forest takes on his former club, Liverpool, at the City Ground on Saturday.

He has scored six goals in 16 appearances for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this season.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest coach Nuno Espirito Santo said Awoniyi is returning to full fitness gradually following a long time out due to injury.

Espirito Santo said: “He was important to the previous game. He didn’t play 45 minutes. Today, he was able to finish the game.

“I think he’s doing better in terms of fitness. He was out for a long period, so let’s see for the next one how he recovers. It’s going to be important.”
