About three residents of the Federal Capital Territory have died of cholera at the Kubwa General Hospital on Wednesday, before they could be treated, THE WHISTLER reports.

THE WHISTLER gathered that there was influx of patients at the accident and emergency ward of the hospital on Wednesday, but only a few could be attended to due to low bed space.

Ajibola Temi, a survivor of Cholera said that she was placed on water infusion for five days, after being admitted at the Kubwa General Hospital.

According to Temi, about seven patients, including her were brought into the hospital to be treated for cholera, but for few spaces, three passed on as they could not get timely treatment.

She said, “I could remember I was stooling after eating indomie that Wednesday. I took some drugs to help control my system but it was not really effective, so I passed out.

“I regained myself at the later hours of the day, but we were told no bed so I was placed on stretcher first, then was given a bed later on.

“We were taken to the accident and emergency ward, because the doctors said that we needed to be urgently attended to, but the bed space was not enough for all of us.”

Temi, who was discharged on Sunday said that she received a fair treatment, but had to spend a lot of money on drips.

“In these five days, I spent lot of money on several drips, sometimes N8,000 a day, sometimes N5,000 just to get drip and that went on for 5 days.

“One of the patients that could not get a bed space died on the way, as he was being taken to another hospital, while the other two died in the hospital,” she said.

Recall, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, Aliyu Maigoro last week said that the state recorded 20 deaths resulting from the recent cholera outbreak.

Maigoro, had explained that the index case was a 37- year- old housewife, who was admitted at the Burra General Hospital on April 24, 2021 in Ningi Local Government Area.

He said upon her admission, it was discovered there is an ongoing outbreak of similar disease in neighbouring communities like Sumaila and other Local Government Areas of Kano State, which may have spread to Bauchi.

The disease is most common in places with poor sanitation, crowding, as it is usually caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae.
