U.S. Poll: How World Leaders Reacted To Trump’s Defeat

Ahead of the official declaration of Joe Biden as the president-elect of the United States, some world leaders have congratulated him and his running mate, Kamala Harris, on their victory in the November 3, 2020, presidential election.

Several world leaders, including those from Africa, took to social media to congratulate Biden after defeating incumbent President Donald Trump at the polls.

The Democratic Party’s candidate was reported to have scored 290 electoral votes to defeat President Trump of the Republican Party, who won 214 electoral votes.

Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, congratulated Biden and highlighted the close relationship between Canada and the US in his message to the president-elect.

“Congratulations Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” Trudeau wrote on Twitter, adding that, “Our two countries are close friends, partners and allies. We share a relationship that’s unique on the world stage. I’m really looking forward to working together and building on that with you both.”

In his congratulatory message, UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said in a tweet: “The US is our most important ally and I look forward to working closely together on our shared priorities, from climate change to trade and security.”

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, said it was “time to get back to building bridges, not walls”, apparently referring to Trump’s policy of building a wall at the US-Mexico border.

Irish Prime Minister, Micheál Martin, also tweeted: “I want to congratulate the new President Elect of the USA,” adding that, “Joe Biden has been a true friend of this nation throughout his life and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead. I also look forward to welcoming him back home when the circumstances allow!”

President Emmanuel Macron of France said: “The Americans have chosen their President. Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris! We have a lot to do to overcome today’s challenges. Let’s work together!”

In her reaction, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and Trump’s political adversary, Nancy Pelosi, tweeted: “We kept the republic! Congratulations to Joe Biden on his victory for the soul of our country. Congratulations to Kamala Harris for making history. It’s a time to heal and a time to grow together.”

African leaders were not left out in the outpour of congratulatory messages to Biden and Harris.

President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone described the duo’s victory as “historic,” adding that, “Sierra Leone looks forward to a more strengthened relationship.”

Namibia’s President Hage Geingob also tweeted: “During our struggle for freedom, we came to know him as a Senator who opposed apartheid in South Africa and the region. I look forward to working with @JoeBiden for stronger bilateral relations and multilateralism for a fairer world.”

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has yet to issue a statement on the outcome of the U.S. election as of press time.
