We Advise Madagascar Against Use Of Herbal Remedy For Covid-19 Unless… WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) , Africa Region, has warned against using any drug that has not been clinically tested, adding that the Covid-19 Organics(CVO) from Madagascar must undergo trial to determine its efficacy.

“We are advising the government of Madagascar to take this product through a clinical trial and we are prepared to collaborate with them.

“We would caution and advise countries against adopting a product that has not been through clinical tests for safety & efficacy,” Matshidiso Moeti, WHO’s Regional Director said on Thursday.

Madagascar’s President, Andry Rajoelina, had claimed that the country’s herbal mixture could prevent and cure Covid-19.

Moeti also said that the Coronavirus cases in Africa could get out of hand if the health system was not strengthened to meet the demands of the current pandemic.

She stressed that African countries should not relax but be ready to contain further eventuality.

She advised governments to ensure that if there would be a gradual easing of restrictions, it should be within the guidelines of the public health advisory on covid-19 as stipulated by WHO.

She warned that if the African continent would not take covid-19 measures seriously, a devastating consequence may result in the coming weeks.

“Overall, looking at the evolution of the #COVID19 #pandemic, and especially now we are looking at community spread in some countries, we are estimating that this will peak in four to six weeks if nothing is done.”

“There are now around 50,000 confirmed cases and 2000 have lost their lives across the African continent, and it is incredibly important that countries use data-driven, evidence-based approaches in the response,” she said.
