WHO Predicts COVID-19 Infections To Cross 1m In Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) , Africa Region, says confirmed Covid-19 infections will cross one million in the days ahead on the continent.

Meanwhile, over 554,000, out of 889,457 confirmed cases ( and 18,806 deaths) have been discharged, WHO’s latest dashboard shows.

In a tweet on Thursday, the health agency called for the strengthening of emergency responses in case of such an eventuality.

“COVID19 infections in #Africa will exceed one million in coming days as pandemic surges in hotspot countries.

“It’s critical to step up and decentralize response,” it tweeted.

On her part, WHO’s Regional Director, Matshidiso Moeti, further explained that governments would have to increase testing capacities so as to ascertain the actual Covid-19 status of their countries.

She stressed on “the importance of increased testing for #COVID19 in #Africa, especially as countries ease lockdown measures and the number of confirmed cases increases.”
