X To Show User Country On Profile To Combat Misinformation

Popular social media giant X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced an experimental feature that will display additional user profile details, including the country of origin.

The initiative was announced in a tweet by Nikita Bier, X’s Head of Product.

“When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity.

“As part of that, we’re experimenting with displaying new information on profiles, including which country an account is based in, among other details,” Nikita stated.

THE WHISTLER observed on Wednesday that the feature has been rolled out on the profiles of X team members to gather feedback before a broader rollout. Upon clicking on Nikita’s joined date, his own profile, based in the United States, was displayed, showing details such as his join date, account updates, and app store origin (United States App Store).

“This is critical to getting a pulse on important issues happening in the world,” Bier stated in his post.

The feature builds on X’s existing efforts, such as the Community Notes programme, to provide transparent metadata and help users make informed judgments about the accounts they engage with.

To address privacy concerns, Bier confirmed that the platform will include privacy toggles, with opt-outs potentially highlighted on profiles. In regions like the European Union, where speech penalties are a concern, the feature will substitute country details with broader regions to protect free expression.
