‘You Were Not Elected In 1999’ Abiola’s Daughter Bombs Obasanjo Again

The children of late MKO Abiola are unrelenting in their attacks on former President Olusegun Obasanjo as another of the late politician’s daughter; Tundun Abiola has claimed Obasanjo was not elected president in 1999 but rather appointed.

THE WHISTLER recalls that Hafsat Abiola-Costello, in reaction to President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent recognition of her late father, criticised Obasanjo for failing to honour the late politician even though he (Obasanjo) was the chief beneficiary of the May 29, 1999, Democracy Day.

Abiola-Costello had decried that Obasanjo failed to ‘‘ask the country to observe a minute of silence’’ for her late parents during his inauguration as president in 1999 even though they sacrificed their lives for the democracy the country is enjoying today.

In the same light, Tundun Abiola said on Channels TV’s “Rubbin Minds” on Sunday that former president Obasanjo merely contested any election in 1999 but was rather selected by a few.

“Obasanjo was appointed the president, he was not elected president. We did not have any election in 1999, we had a coronation,” Tundun stated during the TV programme on Sunday.

“When you know you were not elected, you know you were selected and just appointed president by the military, it is galling for him to have acknowledged a democratic process.

“President Obasanjo and my father had a relationship then; so what happened in their lifetime continued even after my father was dead. He cannot bear the idea of Moshood Abiola – so he did not do it,” she claimed.
