Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte had given a directive that citizens should remain at home for now; the government’s decree also suspended civic and religious ceremonies in the nation.

The Diocese of Rome had also suspended all public Masses until April 3.

“The Church of Rome assumes an attitude of full responsibility towards the community in the awareness that protection from contagion requires even drastic measures, especially in interpersonal contact,” the church said.

Furthermore, about 463 Italians have died from the coronavirus outbreak, making it the worst hit after China.
