Neymar has been at the centre of a transfer saga that would be the most expensive in football history. Paris Saint Germain are believed to be ready to meet the 25-year-old’s €222m release clause.

It is reported that he told his teammates he was leaving the club and Barca have confirmed he wants the record fee.

The official statement released earlier today reads: “The player Neymar Jr, accompanied by his father and agent, has informed FC Barcelona this morning of his decision to leave the Club in a meeting held at the Club’s offices.

“Faced with this position, the Club has informed them they refer to the buy-out clause of his existing contract which as of 1 July totals 222 million euros which will have to be deposited in its entirety.

Neymar’s father, Neymar Snr., is expected to earn about £58million from his son’s world-record move to the French capital.
