BREAKING: Americans, Others Among ‘Casualties’ As Explosion Rocks Kabul

Assistant to the US Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, John Kirby, confirmed this in a tweet, adding that there are casualties.

“We can confirm that the explosion at the Abbey Gate was the result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US & civilian casualties. We can also confirm at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance from Abbey Gate. We will continue to update.

“We can confirm that the explosion near the Abbey Gate of the Kabul airport has resulted in an unknown number of casualties. We will continue to update.

“Evacuation operations in Kabul will not be wrapping up in 36 hours. We will continue to evacuate as many people as we can until the end of the mission,” he tweeted on Thursday.

This is coming after the US Embassy in Afghanistan had urged Afghans, citizens and allies to avoid the airport.

“Because of security threats outside the gates of Kabul airport, we are advising U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid airport gates at this time unless you receive individual instructions from a U.S. government representative to do so,” the embassy said on Wednesday.

Recall that the US and its allies had already started evacuating people from the country ahead of the August 31 deadline fixed by President Joe Biden.
