Court Decision Undermines Kano Assembly – Ganduje Reacts To Sacking Of Emirs

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has faulted Thursday’s ruling of the state’s high court which nullified the creation of four new emirate councils in the state.

This comes as protests also greeted the court’s nullification of the four traditional emirates recently created in the state.

The Kano State House of Assembly had passed a bill which was assented to by Governor Ganduje for the establishment of Bichi, Rano, Karaye and Gaya emirates from the Kano emirate.

The governor was alleged to have initiated the bill and presented it the Kano Assembly by proxy in a bid to allegedly whittle down the influence of the Emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi II.

But Justice Na’Abbu of the Kano State High court declared the creation of the emirates null and void, while faulting the petition submitted to the state assembly leading to the creation of the emirates.

Na’Abbu, who gave the ruling in a suit challenging the creation of the new emirates, also ordered the sack of the four new first-class emirs appointed for those emirates.

The ruling was however protested by some residents who took to the streets on Thursday to express displeasure over the development.

In its reaction, the Kano State Government, through the commissioner of information, Malam Muhammad Garba, said it was studying the ruling of the court and would take immediate appropriate action afterwards.

The Kano government suggested that the court had undermined the “constitutional power and authority conferred on the State Assembly” by its ruling “such progressive and important issue.”

The commissioner said “the Government will not fold its arms and concedes such constitutional power in the interest of the wellbeing of the people and general development of the state.”

Garba said despite the ruling, “the government still recognizes them as First Class Emirs and will continue dealing with them as such.”

The state government urged the protesters to be calm, law abiding and await further action.
