Covid-19 Cases Rising But Motorists Still Carry ‘Overload’, Says FCT Police

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested residents who failed to comply with COVID-19 protocols, revealing the rate of non-compliance was high.

This was disclosed by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Adamu Ciroma, in Abuja on Wednesday

Ciroma said residents were ignoring all the safety measures advised by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) despite rising cases of the virus in the FCT, adding that non-compliance with covid-19 guidelines was high in the territory.

“There is a lot of overloading in public transportation. There is none use of the face mask by individuals…” he said.

Ciroma noted that such disregard for safety guidelines would hamper the efforts to contain the spread of the disease.

He further said all hands must be on deck to ensure the safety of all, adding, “It is not just about enforcement but about taking responsibility for one’s health”.

In the last two weeks, the FCT has recorded high cases of COVID-19, and as of Tuesday, December 22, 2020, it topped the list with 416 new cases.

The new record takes the total infections in the FCT to 10,122 while cases across the country near 80,000 as of Tuesday.

The NCDC has continued to enjoin citizens to wash and sanitize their hands regularly before wearing their facemasks.

Also, the agency warned that face shields alone do not provide sufficient protection but a combination of nose masks do.

The NCDC Director, Chikwe Ihekweazu, on Tuesday also reiterated the need to avoid mass gatherings while ensuring physical distancing this yuletide season.
