The slain soldiers, until their death served with the 181 Amphibious Battalion, and were on a peace mission to quell a communal clash between Okuama and Okoloba, two neighbouring communities in the state.

Community members, while recounting what led to the incident, said the military men had allegedly opened fire on them, killing about 50 people and subsequently razing their communities following a disagreement during a peace talk.

However, a Joint Task Force under the supervision of the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Maj.-Gen, Jamal Abdussalam, recovered 15 bodies of the soldiers.

While some of the bodies had their heads severed, others had their stomachs ripped off with some of the vital organs missing.
