Elisha Abbo: Court Dismisses Sexual Assault Case Against Senator

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Zuba, Abuja, has dismissed a sexual assault case filed against Elisha Abbo, the Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District in Adamawa State.

Abbo had made headlines in May, 2019, after he was captured in a CCTV footage allegedly assaulting a nursing mother, Osimibibra Warmate, at a sex toy shop in Abuja.

The senator, who was charged with two counts of criminal use of force and criminal assault before the court, had apologized to Warmate at a press conference he organized last year.

The Nigeria Police had arraigned Abbo before the court on July 8, 2019, following a petition filed against him.

But the magistrate, Abdullahi Ilelah, at the sitting on Friday, dismissed the suit against Abbo for lack of proper prosecution.

“The IPO (Investigating Police Officer) did not investigate this case at all or she just charged the defendant to court via the F.I.R (First Information Report) without due care and attention. In fact, she has succeeded in creating a doubt in the mind of this court during cross-examination and the Supreme Court held that where there is a doubt in a criminal trial, such doubt should be resolved in favour of the defendant,” Punch quoted Ilelah to have said.
