FIRS To Get New Operational Structure For Enhanced Tax Revenue

In a bid to enhance efficiency and ensure effectiveness in revenue collection, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is to adopt a new operational structure in tax administration in the country.

The new operational structure, which has already received the approval of the Executive Council of the Federation, is expected to be unveiled by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, during a two-day strategic management meeting of the FIRS scheduled for Abuja on Wednesday and Thursday.

The special adviser on media to the FIRS Chairman, Dare Adekanmbi, who confirmed the approval of the new structure said the strategic retreat would provide the opportunity for all FIRS directors to be adequately briefed on the workings of the new structure and the strategic direction of the Service.

The retreat, which has the theme: “Reimagining Tax Administration for Equity and Economic Growth” would give the FIRS the opportunity also engage with external stakeholders in government, professional bodies, and the organised private sector on the renewed and refocused strategy of the agency, Adekanmbi said

On the new direction of the FIRS, Adekanmbi said since assumption of office, the new Chairman of the FIRS, Zacch Adedeji, has been championing a radical transformation in the values of the tax agency.

He said the vision of the new Chairman has been to ensure the FIRS was more taxpayer-centric and a well-suited revenue-collecting agency, adding that his approach necessitated a significant overhaul of the agency’s operational and management structures as well as a re-engineering of tax processes to support taxpayers to exercise their civic obligations.

The new operational structure would ensure a modernised system of tax administration that was not only equitable, but also growth-oriented.

“It is hoped that this retreat will foster a shared vision among FIRS directors and inspire confidence and excitement for the future of tax administration in the country. It will also provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the new structure and its implications for their roles under the new tax administration system,” Adekanmbi said.
