Ghana Sack Coach After Embarassing Nations Cup Exit

Ghana have sacked Chris Hughton following their first round exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The English manager has paid the price for failing to guide his team to the next round after a poor showing in the group stage.

The Black Stars lost to Cape Verde in their first match of the competition before playing out a 2-2 draw with Egypt in the second match.

They surrendered a 2-0 lead against Mozambique to play out a 2-2 draw, which put paid to their chances of advancing to the next round with a paltry two points.

Cameroon’s 3-2 victory over Gambia on Tuesday ensured that Ghana won’t be able to earn one of the best losers’ spots in the competition.

Hughton was appointed as the Technical Advisor of the team in February 2022 ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

He was named the head coach in February 2023, but following the team’s poor performances in Ivory Coast, he has now been shown the exit door.

The Ghanian Football Association confirmed his sacking in a statement on Wednesday morning.

The statement read: “Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA) statement said.

“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton managed just four wins, five draws and four defeats in his 13 games in charge of Ghana.

Ghana have now failed to make it out of the group stage in their last two Nations Cup tournaments.
