“The ‘Amotekun’ security outfit will become operational very soon and it is highly commendable; this is to underscore the uniqueness of our zone,” Adejare-Alaran said in his new year message issued on Friday.

“Back in the days when we were still operating regional system of government, the South-West was a model for good leadership and centre of development for other regions.

“The present leadership of the South-West zone saw the need to improve the security of lives and property of our people and also revitalise regional integration. All these efforts are very laudable,” said Adejare-Alaran who was the deputy governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in the March 2019 governorship elections in Oyo State.

The establishment of ‘Amotekun’ is coming against the backdrop of reported security concerns in Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun and Lagos states that make up the region.

THE WHISTLER had reported how Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of the leader of Afenifere Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, was shot dead in July 2018 in Ore, Ondo state, allegedly by herdsmen.

Various security meetings were held following the incident, after which leaders from the South West reached the resolution to establish the security outfit.
