A Coalition of Civil Society groups in the Niger Delta, has slammed former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, over comments credited to him saying Dr. Goodluck Jonathan did not have the capacity to rule Nigeria.

A Joint Statement signed by leaders of the group and made available to THE WHISTLER on Sunday, described Obasanjo’s statement as irresponsible and baseless, adding that the former Head of State has no moral standing to abuse Dr. Jonathan.

The group rated Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as the best president Nigeria has ever had.

According to the statement Obasanjo was part of the conspiracy that led to Jonathan’s loss in the 2015 Presidential election.

The group further attributed the suffering in the country as the manifestation of the evil plot against the wish of many Nigerians.

The group leaders includes, Niger Delta Security Watch Organisation of Nigeria, NDSWO, Dickson Bekederemo Esq, President, Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative, IPDI, Comr. Austin Ozobo, National President, Foundation for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade, FHRACC, Alaowei Ebikonbowei Cleric Esq.

“Jonathan remains the best President Nigeria ever had. He may have his own short comings but he has the best democratic credentials far and above his predecessors including the present Government.

“We disagree with Former President Olusegun Obasanjo in all fronts. OBJ has no moral rectitude to say Jonathan was not qualified to rule the country. When Jonathan was a good political son to OBJ then he was not childish. How can a man of Obasanjo status be making such irresponsible and baseless comment on Jonathan who had all the qualities to govern the Country when they were in good terms? It is quite true that some of our political leaders are becoming a big burden to the younger generation.”

The Group also condemned media reports credited to the immediate past National President as well as factional President of Ijaw Youth Council, Engr. Udengs Eradiri and Comrade Eric Omare.

The group described the duo’s statement as ” reckless” and ” needless” stressing that the sycophantic views do not represent the general views of Niger Deltans and Ijaw people towards former President Jonathan.

“The media tirades hauled at former President Goodluck Jonathan by the duo of Eric Omare and Udengs Eradiri is most condemnable, especially as it is authored by two illustrious sons of the Ijaw nation who once held sway the media in defending Jonathan’s Government with tooth and nail. For Udengs and Omare to go into the jugular to criticise Jonathan over a book written by another person, without getting his direct opinion shows how desperate our people are up to in looking for leadership position.

“Udengs’ holier-than-thou riddance to Jonathan is most inappropriate. He cannot speak from both sides of his mouth. This is the same man in several news publications absolved Jonathan of every corruption allegation against him and his family now came back to say Jonathan failed because of corruption issues against his Government. The Udengs that exculpated Jonathan’s Government from being corrupt in the series of newspaper interviews he granted such as Vanguard, 26th October, 2015; Guardian, 11th April, 2016; Punch, 23rd September, 2016 etc is different from the Udengs that brazenly berated the same Jonathan over a third-party account of his 2015 Presidential election? We do not expect this from Udengs, a former President of the Ijaw Youth Council who was one of the greatest beneficiaries of the Jonathan Government.

“He failed because some persons felt governance is their birth right and that nobody apart from them is qualified to rule Nigeria. Even if Jonathan had won the election, there would still be civil war because the conspiracy was to prevent a minority from further steering the ship of the nation.” ”

“The western powers that aided his defeat were just products of political invention through the propaganda machineries of the Yoruba, Hausa and Fulani hegemony.”
