He was a two-term Senator representing Yobe East Senatorial District, until 2019 when he stepped down for the current minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Geidam.

In 2017, Ibrahim was involved in a scandal when a sex tape allegedly showing him in a threesome went viral online.

He admitted he was the person in the video, saying: “This is a personal, private matter. What does my having been with a girl have to do with the public?

“If they say I raped, that’s a different matter altogether. Is it because I am a public official then I am not supposed to be entitled to private life?” he had asked.
