JUST IN: Fire Guts Sawmill In Lagos

Goods worth millions of Naira are feared destroyed as fire gutted a sawmill in Lagos State on Sunday.

The fire incident, THE WHISTLER gathered, occurred at Awori bus stop, along the Lagos Abeokuta Expressway, in the Abule Egba area of the state.

Confirming the incident, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the fire has been contained from spreading beyond the sawmill.

The cause of the fire, she informed, is yet to be ascertained.

Currently, firemen from the Agege, Abesan and Alausa Fire Stations are at the scene trying to dampen the fire.

“It is a sawmill fire on a vast land,” Adeseye said in a statement. “The Fire has been curtailed from spreading beyond the sawmill and put under control.”

Fortunately, there is no record of casualties in the incident.

This happened about two weeks after the 14-storey Mandilas building, located on Broad Street, Lagos Island, was engulfed by fire.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), about 6,700 traders, 450 shops, 30 offices, two hotels and five restaurant were affected in the fire incident at Mandilas Building.

In October last year, the state fire service said N1.62 billion estimated value of property was lost between January 1 to October 29, 2023 due to a fire outbreak in the state.

Also during the period under review, about N9.728 billion worth of property was saved, while 1,327 fire call and 154 rescue calls were received by the agency
