VIDEO: Fire Guts 3 Buildings In Lagos

Properties worth millions are feared destroyed as three buildings are currently on fire in the Idumota area of Lagos State.

The affected buildings include a two-storey structure and one three-storey building.

Emergency responders are currently trying to douse the fire.

Confirming the incident, the Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, said the agency received a distress call around 07:41 a.m.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service have been alerted to a Fire emergency at the intersection of Nanadi Azikwe and Docemo in Idumota, Lagos. At 07:41 hours, the call was received, and emergency services swiftly mobilized.

“Upon arrival at 07:58 hours, it was discovered that the Fire encompasses three buildings, including two 2-storey structure and one three-storey buildings.

“Currently, Firefighting efforts are underway at the scene.

“The Fire stations at Ebute Elefun, Ilupeju and Alausa have deployed resources to mitigate the situation effectively as firefighting operations is ongoing,” she said in a statement.

According to Adeseye, casualties have not been confirmed at this time.

She stated that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, adding that investigations are ongoing.

“We urge residents to cooperate with emergency personnel and avoid the area for their safety.

“Further updates will be provided as the situation unfolds,” Adeseye added.

In February, a male adult was reportedly injured when a fire gutted some makeshift structures in the Ikate-Elegushi area of the state.

The incident happened just a week after goods worth millions of Naira were destroyed as fire gutted a sawmill at Awori bus stop, along the Lagos Abeokuta Expressway, in the Abule Egba area of the state.

On January 21, a 14-storey Mandilas building, located on Broad Street, Lagos Island, was also engulfed by fire.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), about 6,700 traders, 450 shops, 30 offices, two hotels and five restaurants were affected in the fire incident at Mandilas Building.

In October last year, the state fire service said N1.62 billion estimated value of property was lost between January 1 to October 29, 2023, due to a fire outbreak in the state.

Also during the period under review, about N9.728 billion worth of property was saved, while 1,327 fire and 154 rescue calls were received by the agency.

The agency recently said that about 251 fire-related emergency calls were received in January alone.
